Upcoming – The "INTERSECTION" Exhibition opens as Sparks Gallery on March 10, 2024 in San Diego, CA – Opening Reception is on March 23, 2024 5-8PM – RSVP!
Posted on February 29, 2024
Sparks Gallery is pleased to show new work by bi-coastal artist Monty Montgomery in his solo exhibition, “Intersection”. Join us for the reception on Saturday, March 23, 2024 from 5-8pm: RSVP HERE
Profoundly affected by his upbringing in the rural woods of Virginia’s countryside, Monty Montgomery’s work has always been informed by his visceral and emotional reactions to everyday experiences, such as exploring nature, or trekking city streets. His distinctive artistic voice was shaped in his teen years, when he began expressing his perception of the external world in bright geometric abstraction. His characteristic style emerged as a result of distilling sensory input through the lens of urban and natural landscapes. Using color theory, mathematics, and intuition, he attempts to harmonize the collision of these elements into something beautiful and cohesive.
Montgomery uses his innate intuition for color and object relationships to connect with the viewer, sharing his artistic vision through a “visual-emotional language”, as he calls it. His interpretation of everyday scenes is often surprising, as the end results look vastly different than their real world counterparts. This unique perspective grants Montgomery both strength and vulnerability in his art practice.
From the Artist:
“In the ‘Intersection’ exhibition, I wanted to express the various paths that have lead me to this point emotionally, physically, and artistically. It feels as if I am constantly encountering new directions, and have grown more sensitive to my surroundings in response; I have been spending more time alone, going deeper into nature and exploring unfamiliar alleys through major cities. Even the work in this exhibition has developed a new life of its own as it travels across the country, to exhibit at different locations.
So much has changed in our world over the last few years, causing each and every one of us to take new directions with ourselves, our feelings, and our intentions. I went through many different “Intersections” in life; I recently had spinal surgery and have thankfully made it through that two-year experience. Over the last three and a half years I have journeyed from Brooklyn, New York to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and over to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Charlottesville, Virginia before realizing how important it was to call San Diego, California home again. I now share my time between being Home in the city of San Diego and the deep woods of Virginia where I grew up.
‘Intersection’ is a representation of the balance I need in my life to create, to see, and to FEEL the ways I feel. This balance allows the creativity to flow from my mind, through my fingers and onto a surface. In much of my newest work, texture has been more prevalent and brings the depth of my emotions and visions to the surface for the viewer to appreciate on a deeper level. The textures in my work may symbolize the natural elements of the earth that I love, while the smoother and angular areas of my work are the vibrations and geometry of major cities and tighter areas of congestion. I am more concentrated these days with my emotions and how I feel them—I talk less and am quieter so that I can feel these things stronger. I believe this is the power inside that enables me to bring more energy and depth to my work. I’m excited about the ‘Intersection’ I currently stand at in this moment in time, and I look forward to those ahead.” – Monty Montgomery
Montgomery’s works will be on view at Sparks Gallery from March 10 – April 28, 2024 with a reception on Saturday, March 23, 2024 from 5-8pm.
Thanks so much to the city of Minneapolis, MN and to all the folks who rolled out to @gamutgallerympls for the opening of “EXOSKELETON”. The evening was filled with amazing energy and positive vibes! Much love to @mplsartbabe and the Gamut Family for hosting us and featuring our work in their beautiful gallery. Extremely honored that so many pieces found new forever homes on opening night!
Originally introduced at the Sound of Art Exhibition in New York over 15 years ago, Monty Montgomery & @tony_philippou merged their unique artistic styles into #Kaleidoskull, blending figurative realism and abstract geometry. Tony’s contrasting realistic human and animal forms emerge out of the structure of Monty’s precise angles of bold color, textures, and shapes. Kaleidoskull’s latest series of works featured in Exoskeleton utilize insects as representations of the literal and metaphorical translation of our defense mechanisms we use to protect ourselves physically and emotionally. Together the duo constructs visual imagery that relates to our sense of wonder at the exquisite beauty of things masked, yet revealed. Each figure in their paintings and drawings is combined with an insect as a form of armor and anonymity. Monty and Tony wish to connect with viewers through their world of imagination, inspiring the audience to feel empowered and engaged with the world they have created.
Inspired by their combined love of geometric and organic forms, Montgomery and Philippou endeavored to create a new aesthetic that exhibited the beauty, strength, and contrast of the design elements intersecting women, insects, and color theory. Boundaries are intended to be pushed in the realm of art, design, and the remarkable synergy between nature and geometry as a definitive force.

A few words from Lauren Siri of 1805 Gallery. – “1805 Gallery is thrilled to offer a selection of Monty Montgomery’s original works from the Geo Series that were originally commissioned by Polychromist of the San Diego Museum of Art in 2019 for their annual “Art Alive” event. Monty’s geometric paintings are clean precise blocks of color that are effortlessly layered and intersect to create the illusion of depth. Monty Montgomery Art is known for his Geo Series, a lifelong painting exploration with endless color and shape combinations. Bright blue triangles, fire-orange squares, lime-green trapezoids are just a few of the shapes and colors that compose Monty’s paintings. He has created over 140 works in the Geo series to date. His preferred paint palette is a collection of vibrant Montana Cans (official) that he selects as he develops a painting or mural. His intuitive process demonstrates clear confidence in color and composition.”

The “Brown Ballerinas for Change” collaborative mural with Nico Cathcart has been completed in the Fan District of Richmond, Virginia on the corner of Main and Granby streets. The mural is inspired by the activism and power of the four young women who make up Brown Ballerinas for Change. The mural contains all four ballerinas unified together in a graceful jump with a sparrow in flight symbolizing renewal and change. We are all so thankful for the uplifting energy that Ava, Kennedy, Sophia, and Shania have gifted the country. The mission of B.B.F.C. is to help create advocacy, social justice, and to increase participation of underrepresented populations in ballet. Nico and I are incredibly honored to have worked with this group of powerful young women. Thank you to Dogtown Dance Theatre , Richmond Community ToolBank and @emmeister16 for sponsoring this project and to @delaney_hall for the feature on ABC 8News – WRIC. This original Geo Series painting titled “Geo #113” was featured at the 2020 Longwood Center for the Visual Arts Winter Gala benefit sale and auction which opened on Saturday, February 15, 2020 from 8pm-12am in the Blackwell Ballroom on Longwood University’s campus in Farmville, Virginia. It’s always an honor to be invited back by my Alma Mater to participate in this amazing event to raise funds and support so many wonderful organizations.
The LCVA’s widely anticipated biennial gala is the best attended event of its kind in the region. All proceeds support the LCVA’s community outreach programs. More than 500 attendees will delight in an elegant evening while enjoying heavy hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, and live music. A live auction, featuring fine arts and crafts, complements a sale gallery.
We envision the LCVA as a place for everyone, and we take that “place” with us no matter where we go. The 2020 gala theme Dream, invites you to join us in letting our hopes and aspirations for the future run free. In the past, our collective dreaming brought life to the LCVA as it exists today, whether that is an exhibition in downtown Farmville, or hands-on interdisciplinary art activity in classrooms in our 14-county service area. We continue to dream about who we can become when we work together to be the change we wish to see in our community.

Originally introduced…
at a Sound of Art Exhibition in NY over 15 years ago, Tony Philippou & Monty Montgomery have now decided to partner together to explore a unique artistic vision. A blend of figurative realism, abstract geometry and urban themes. Contrasting organic and physical forms against the hard precise angles of bold color and shape is where the duo flourish.
Separately they work on concepts, color theory and lighting choices. At which point they will collectively review sketches for final decisions before embarking on the execution phase for their painted works and murals.
Their partnership is aimed at constructing visual imagery that is pleasing to the viewer. They would love to do nothing more than appeal to your sense of wonderment and exquisite beauty.

Hope all of you are doing great out there! It’s been so nice having a little time here in Virginia with Family and Friends. WOW x WOW is incredibly proud to present Beyond the Untold, our largest group show of 2018. The exhibition features over 80 international artists and consists of close to 100 brand new artworks.Within every visual artist’s quest lies the desire to communicate ideas, to tell stories and to evoke emotions in their audience. The process of creating is different for everyone, but often, the tiny seed of an initial concept is given the space to grow in the artist’s mind, in order to reach it’s full potential. The incomplete unspoken narrative is allowed to ferment, then through the creative process it is further tweaked, refined and pushed into a mysterious and magical realm ‘Beyond the Untold’.
All sales will be on a first come, first served basis. Purchases can be made through the website, either with a debit/credit card or via PayPal. In the unlikely event that you encounter any issues, please email us at sales@wowxwow.com and we will be happy to assist.

WOW x WOW Gallery proudly presents what will be the second of our now annual exhibitions of square artworks! The show follows and expands on the first ‘WOW²’ which we hosted last year, so we’ve kept things straight forward and titled this one, ‘WOW² (Volume II). Maintaining our priority of allowing participating artists full creative freedom, the show imposes no restrictions on subject matter. The only stipulation is that submitted work be created in a square format. ‘WOW² (Volume II)’ opens on 1st June and will run until 22nd June.

Statement: Monty Montgomery’s artistic vision can best be described as an emotional language created using his innate intuition about color and object relationships to connect with the viewer. This authentic viewpoint often humbly defies the norm giving his work both power and vulnerability.
Profoundly affected by his upbringing in the rural Blueridge Mountains of Virginia, Monty’s work has always been informed by his visceral and emotional reactions to daily experiences whether in exploration of nature or trekking city streets. The epiphany came in his teen years when he began expressing this unique perception of the external world by blending conflicting elements into seamless harmony.
Exposure to divergent settings and combining urban sensory input with his impressions of the natural landscape has inspired a collision into one expression where he attempts through color, and geometric abstraction to share his artistic journey.
Montgomery earned his BFA from Longwood University in 1998 and eventually launched Monty Montgomery Art. montymontgomeryart.com He then combined forces with J FEATHER to form KREASHUN in 2012 and recently with Tony Philippou to form Kaleidoskull in 2016. www.kaleidoskullart.com
Finishing up in the San Diego studio today with this Prismacolor sketch for the upcoming 25′ x 16′ “Moment #44” Nature series mural in the Farmville, Virginia public library. A geometric cave for the children to climb through, that cozy little mountain side beach on a tranquil lake with majestic purple mountains in the distance. Crisp #loveva skies with linear clouds and that nice warm sunshine hitting your skin.
Time to go catch this bird and get to throwing a little color around in good ole’ Farmville, Virginia . montymontgomeryart.com #farmvilleva #virginia #VA #eastcoast #montymontgomery #geometriclandscape #landscape #mural #prismacolor #sketch #wip
It’s a beautiful day here in sunny San Diego, CA but I unfortunately lost a very dedicated and hard working member of the studio family. Keep the good ole’ hair dryer in your thoughts, she simply never let me down and was always there when I needed her to help me dry that paint! The ole’ gal passed away this afternoon at 1:40pm PST in the San Diego, CA studio.
I knew she had been hurting a little lately so I had decided to give her a couple weeks off. Well, I fired her up this morning and she was humming right along and then suddenly, she threw out some heat and spit her final sparks. She was good to me over the years, almost ten to be exact. I’ll miss her dearly but she will be immortalized in the studio forever. Thank you so much for all your hard work, you’ll be missed hair dryer.
Here’s a few words from Don Masse who is a teacher at Zomarano Fine Arts Academy and has put together a little “Go Fund Me” campaign to help raise funds to purchase paint and supplies for our upcoming collaborative mural with the students that will be permanently painted on a wall at the school in the first week of April. Thanks so much for your support!
Don Masse: “At Zamorano Fine Arts Academy, my curriculum focuses on living artists and one of the amazing things about doing so, is that we can interact with these artists digitally, and in some cases, in person. That has been the case with Monty Montgomery, who was kind enough to do an artist talk with 5th graders earlier in the year and who will be coming back to our school to create a mural with 1st and 5th grade students who created drawings inspired by his work!”
Go Fund Me Link: https://www.gofundme.com/a-mural-with-monty
Don Masse: “The funds I am raising will go towards purchasing the paint needed for the 9’ x 25’ mural he will paint with students. Monty is generously donating a week of his time and creativity, and we need the paint purchases to make this wonderful project happen.
This mural project experience will benefit our whole school community. It will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for students that collaborate with Monty. The rest of our classes will tour the mural while It is being created to ask questions and observe a professional artist applying the very skills and concepts that they are learning about in art class. It will add beauty and color to our campus that parents and community members can experience anytime they visit our campus. The mural will be inspired by the Southern California desert landscape and it’s theme and Monty’s geometric abstract style will resonate so well with our school community.
This project will be done the first week of April, so we need to secure supplies by the March 25th.
Your support will mean so much to me and our students. I love being able to bring real world artistic opportunities to our students and your assistance will bring this project to life. You will help bring color and joy to the daily lives of our students!”

I am very honored to have been chosen as the first Artist featured in “Artist Studio Visits” by Ingrid Westlake who is the creator and author behind the “Reinventingrid” Artist Blog. Ingrid approached me about sharing a little of my quiet life in the studio and a few of the interesting moments out on the road with various murals and projects. It has been an amazing experience getting to know her and work together on this project. Ingrid cares so much about the process of ART and the people it comes from. I feel so lucky to now call her a dear friend and collector. I hope you enjoy the interview.

A drawing I did of outer space in third grade, not much has changed over the years. Here is my painting titled “Funky Ryde” from 2008. Still waiting for that spaceship…

Garrett has been a great friend over the years and become one of my top collectors. It was an honor to join them for the get down in Miami and to bring this piece to life.

Biography
As a child growing up in Kalihi Oahu, his friend stole a book from his older brother the book was called Spray Can Art by Henry Chalfant & James Prigoff it was the first time Aaron experienced NYC graffiti. Characters and Styles by Mode 2, Seen and Dondi White also influenced by popping, breaking and the early hip hop movement Aaron was all about it, it wasn’t later until his early teens he got the true taste of graffiti, while growing up in southern california which was neighborhood driven and about tagging and getting your name up.
It was in vegas where Aaron was introduced to true graffiti, whole productions, heavens, pieces and the re-introduction of the Golden age of hip hop music. It was then Aaron got the itch to design Characters, letters and the early influence of design.
Aaron Martin was born on the island Oahu 1977, Hawaii. Most of his childhood was spent growing up and moving from Southern California to Nevada before finally landing back into Hawaii during his Junior year in high school.
In 1999 a car accident changed everything; this life-threatening experience inspired him to leave the island once again, this time to Seattle, Washington. Inspired by the rain and being indoors, he started playing around with different art mediums again. He then left back to Hawaii with a new perspective,
” Being close to death trapped in metal changed everything. Almost 18 years later but its just like it happened yesterday life’s been crazy and unbelievable I been blessed with the best Family and Homies ever, on top of that I been rocking out full time doing what I love just painting and meeting the coolest people.”
Aaron had his first show in 2002 and has not stopped. Showing in galleries up and down California the east coast, have even showed in shows that have traveled from the U.S. to South East Asia, Germany & South Pacific New Zealand and Australia.
His focal medium is acrylic paintings on wood and canvas. Using minimal colors and detailed character design, these paintings are usually comprised of stressed out emotional pandas. The pandas tend to represent the story of struggle.
“Everyone uses the panda of an icon of something cute and harmless, but I love painting them disgruntled and angry; it takes people by surprise.”
Aaron has painted well over a thousand of them. His characters tend to be somewhat repetitive, even anonymous in some instances, but always full of personality and emotion. Being known to rock the Panda from East to West, it’s just a small piece of what Aarons capable of doing. Besides working with acrylics, he also sews costumes, plush figures, sculpts, and dabbles in graphic design and illustration.
“Angry Woebots was never a name it was a concept of what I created, concept of my art, from the car accident until now, from being in a dark place and coming out of the situation fresh and ready to build, getting slammed into metal actually woke me up. Rocking art was the doorway it’s been nonstop ever since.”
What a night at the The Juxtapoz Clubhouse opening, Three floors of awesome installations and incredible artwork.

The new “Fractal Series” door is now installed in the home of Pete and Beth Akey in Charlottesville, Virginia. “Fractal #60” is solid birch and was the first door that I have ever taken on. I wanted to allow the tones and patterns of the beautiful wood to come through while creating an interesting motion and energy that bounced around inside the shape. Specific color choices were dialed in with the client to insure a vibe to fit the interior of their abode. Here is a photo taken by Pete of “Fractal #60” installed with “Fractal #46” featured from their collection as well.

What an amazing visit from my folks! Thanks Mom and Dad for popping on the plane and coming all the way from Virginia! I feel so blessed to have parents that are so loving and supportive. Good times all over San Diego with a little hanging in the South Park studio. It feels like yesterday that I was two years old coloring with my Mom at the kitchen table in the woods of Virginia.
Thanks to my parents and all of you for your support on this “JOURNEY”. I fully believe that there are so many more creative moments ahead. I cannot wait to experience each and every one of them. *Photo Credit – Vito Di Stefano
