Art Guide San Diego – Artists of KAABOO 2017 Part 1: KREASHUN – August 2017 – Del Mar, CA

Posted on September 10, 2017
Many Thanks going out to the Art Guide San Diego Crew for the feature article about our upcoming exhibition and “LIVE” 22′ x 6′ mural in the KAABOO Art Gallery on September 15-17, 2017. See you there! Cheers, KREASHUN
“Artists of KAABOO 2017 Part 1: KREASHUN” – Featured Artist at KAABOO DEL MAR
Art Guide San Diego Link: http://artguidesd.com/

KAABOO arrives in Del Mar again this year with an ever increasingly impressive group of talent and experiences. This “not-a-festival” is an elevated, civilized event for those that enjoy all the good things about a multi-day live experience without the usual bar food, portapotty and standing all day frustrations. Everything is planned to make it the best, most comfortable experience possible. Having been in the past, I can say they deliver on the promise. Get your passes here to get in on the fun (limited number of single and two-day passes are still available as of this writing).

Even though the main draw is the impressive musical lineup, the experience is not complete without the world class Public Art Installations, where awe-inspiring pieces are created both pre-show and live at KAABOO, and the Contemporary Art Fair where exceptional galleries and artists not only show work, but also create contemporary masterpieces on site.

San Diego is well represented, and in this series of articles I am profiling some of the amazing artist and galleries that are going to be there and give a sneak peak (as much as they will reveal, anyway) to what they are planning for you.

“Converge”, by KREASHUN at KAABOO 2016 (Click photo for more details)

First up is KREASHUN, the collaboration between Monty Montgomery and J Feather, whose creations combine the two very different styles of these artists into unique “dream-like murals” that invite the viewer to dive into the layers.

“The Journey” 6′ x18′ “LIVE” mural by KREASHUN (Click photo for more details)

They are setting the bar high this year in their return to KAABOO, planning to complete a 20-foot “LIVE” KREASHUN multimedia piece, as well as two 4-foot individual pieces in three days.

It will be a mixed media piece with large images that feed around each other all coming to life!

Here’s what the duo has to say about this year’s event:

“We are honored to be a Featured Artist this year and to be working alongside so many talented friends in the KAABOO Gallery area. We are keeping the content of the piece quiet until it begins at the event. It will be a mixed media piece with large images that feed around each other all coming to life! A little portion of the piece will be planned out and then over the event we freely go at it allowing the piece to take it’s own course of development.”

“The Calm” 6′ x 8′ “LIVE” mural by KREASHUN (Click photo for more details)

I look forward to seeing what they come up with this year, and hope you will join me in experiencing the journey.

Experience Art + History at “Rabbitville – “A Hop-Up Gallery” during Comic-Con International July 20-23, 2017

Posted on July 10, 2017
Gaslamp Quarter Association presents: “Rabbitville—A Hop-Up Gallery” sure to draw crowds for San Diego Comic-Con International July 20-23
GASLAMP QUARTER (SAN DIEGO, CA.)– The Gaslamp Quarter Association is proud to announce a limited exhibition of the “Rabbitville” public art project during the 2017 San Diego Comic Con International. This four-day long “hop-up gallery” will feature many of the rabbit sculptures which celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Gaslamp Quarter. Located at 453 Fifth Avenue, the gallery will be open to the public from Thursday, July 20th through Saturday, July 22nd from 10:00am-8:00pm and Sunday, July 23rd from 11:00am-5:00pm. Photos of Gaslamp’s history, limited edition t-shirts, and photo opportunities with the iconic rabbits will be available.

Comic Con brings nearly 150,000 people to the Gaslamp Quarter from all over the world. As the preeminent pop culture convention, all eyes will be focused on San Diego. “We want to help share our story with the throngs of fans from around the globe that will descend on our neighborhood. Many Comic-Con visitors don’t know our history,” says Michael Trimble, Executive Director of the Gaslamp Quarter Association. “‘Rabbitville’ teaches the Gaslamp Quarter’s history using contemporary art in a fun, enjoyable way.”

150 years ago, the area that is now the Gaslamp Quarter was jokingly nicknamed “Rabbitville” after its chief inhabitants. The “Rabbitville” installation honors the pioneering spirit of the legendary founder, Alonzo Horton, who transformed Rabbitville into modern San Diego. Each fiberglass sculpture and stand measures seven feet high. These original sculptures have been designed by 15 artists who have created each one in various mediums. The activation is just one of the locations the herd of rabbits will be hopping to throughout the sesquicentennial anniversary year.

“Since their unveiling in May, “Rabbitville” has attracted thousands of followers! These amazing sculptures each have their own unique personality reflecting the diversity of the Gaslamp Quarter,” said Trimble. “Our rich history and unique culture are exemplified in each one!”

Rabbits on display will be, Matt Forderer’s “Willabee;” Tasha Hobb’s “Honoring the Disdained;” Monty Montgomery’s “Diego;” Sarah Soward’s “Against All Odds We Thrive;” Rebecca Nuvoletta’s “Ordinate;” Mario Herbelin-Canelas’s “Life’s Good,” sponsored by Pacific Magazine; and Lee Sie’s “Nelly Ghirardelli,” sponsored by Ghirardelli Chocolatier. Also, visitors are certain to get a surprise sighting of the “Rogue Rabbit,” sponsored by Instant Callers! This celebrity rabbit roams around the Gaslamp Quarter posing for pictures and collecting memorabilia that will later be used in a mosaic around the rabbit’s coat.

San Diego City Councilman Chris Ward, the San Diego Padres, and Pendry San Diego have sponsored rabbits currently in production. For “Rabbitville– A Hop-Up Gallery” and “Rabbitville” exhibition updates make sure to check out Gaslamp.org/150.

A few words from Ann Marie Coolick the Founder/Curator of the East Coast Art Collective. “Introducing @eastcoastartcollective artist Monty Montgomery Art. Monty Montgomery is an abstract artist who was born and raised in Virginia and currently splits his time between San Diego and the east coast. “Listening to the silence of a color allows me to break everything down, question the proper color of the object or situation, and apply my own reality to it so that all objects or shapes can be felt, individually and as a group through specific color and location choices. My work is constantly based on making connections with my surroundings in nature and visually absorbing every point of attraction and emotion through various moments in public.” Monty is also part of the artistic duo KREASHUN who create colorful, dreamlike interior and exterior walls around the globe.” #eastcoastartcollective

A few words from Chris Chillemi, the owner and creator of “Robots Will Kill”: The Robots Will Kill 15th anniversary show that became a block party. Oh with some live painting, pizza, raffles and good times. Where to start. First thank you to all of the amazing artists. Everyone’s pieces looked amazing and congrats to everyone because one of the only things I heard all night was how great the show looked. Thank you to EVERYONE who came out! I apologize if we didn’t get to speak but between painting the van, talking to people and the amazing time I got a little tied up. Pulling up and seeing a line of people 2 hours before the doors opened was incredibly humbling. Seeing so many people walk around with Robots Will Kill shirts was crazy. This reminds me, yes to everyone who was asking there will be new shirts and hoodies soon. Lots of stuff planned. Thank you to everyone who posted the flier and helped spread the word. One of the best things I heard was “there was no way to miss this, it was one of the most promoted things I’ve every seen on social media”. This means a lot to me. Thank you to everyone one who has supported me and @robotswillkill over the years. Whether it was stopping by the site, uploading pictures, buying something, coming to a show, telling friends etc etc etc. Thank you to everyone who came out early for the bags. Luckily we had great weather. And thank you to everyone who bought a tote bag and took part in the raffles. Thank you to all of the artists over the years who have supported. Again I’m sorry I couldn’t fit everyone in the show. For 20th we’ll rent an airplane hanger. Thank you @lassopizza for all the pizza. People loved it! Thank you to all of the artists who sent in stickers, buttons, paintings etc for the giveaways. Those bags were stuffed to the gills!!! Thank you so much to the guys at @myplasticheart for everything and for always supporting. By far one of the best places in New York. Thank you to my friends and family. You know why. Thank you @zeroproductivity for an awesome flier design. Thank you @rega_army for EVERYTHING!!! Thank you @herb_smith for pushing my artwork and help make RWK what it has become. -Chris Chillemi

The "Nature Series" benches are completed in Rio Blanco, Matagalpa, Nicaragua

Posted on March 26, 2016

It’s been an amazing week in Nicaragua with the mission team from Grace Bible Church of Virginia Beach, Virginia on our “Serve and Learn Trip”. We landed in Managua, Matagalpa and joined forces with the “Connect Nicaragua” team. After spending quality time in the community and gathering supplies, we hit the road for the seven hour bus ride into Rio Blanco, Matagalpa and reached our final destination at the “Verbo Rio Blanco” Church. There were so many powerful moments shared through being together, giving to each other, and creating very special memories with the community.

verbochurchgroupphotoweb

We worked with the Verbo Church members and the local children hand painting the artwork on crafted benches. Each bench was designed after taking in the energy and hearing how each teen recognizes God in the Nature that surrounds them. The “Nature Series” benches will be placed in various locations through the community of Rio Blanco for the people to enjoy. Thank you to Chris and Kelly Jordan of Grace Bible Church, The “Connect Nicaragua” crew, and the wonderful people of the Verbo Church. This experience will never be forgotten and we will surely join forces again soon to spread LOVE to all in every way possible. *View all eight benches in “Gallery 2016” on this website.

There was a silent auction / raffle set up for the painting at the fundraiser which was held at McGrady’s in Charlottesville, VA on Saturday, March 19, 2016 from 5pm until close. James is a super friendly guy and well known around “C-Ville” @ilovecville as a taxi driver who always takes care of people and makes sure they get home safe. Unfortunately, his health had taken a turn for the worse a while back but thankfully he is doing better now. Let’s all pitch in and do what we can to help with his medical bills. Various talented Charlottesville musicians were jamming throughout the evening.

A Lecture for the students of San Diego State University "SDSU" on March 1, 2016 from 5:30 to 6:45pm on the campus.

I am very honored and excited to have spoken to the students of San Diego State University on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 from 5:30 to 6:45 about ART and the PATH that it has carried me upon since I was a small child. The evening was was filled with great conversation and lots of learning all around. I look forward to returning to work with the students at SDSU again soon!

Artists + Designers In Real Time

*Below is a statement from SDSU professor and Artist David Fobes http://art.sdsu.edu/faculty-members/david-fobes/

“Muralist, Street Artist, Entrepreneur Monty Montgomery will be our speaker on March 1st, 5:30-6:45 GMCS-333 on the SDSU campus.

I met Monty Montgomery when I had asked him to assist on the SDSU Art Benches Project
http://sdsuartbench.blogspot.com/…/beach-bums-monty-montgom….
Monty is one of the most enthusiastic and generous people I have ever met. He is also one of the busiest artists on the planet and I have been trying to arrange him to speak for over a year. (He leaves the next day for a project in Costa Rica!).

His work is a reflection of his love for life and his sympathetic reaction to his immediate environment when working on a project.
Its going to be a fun evening with one of San Diego’s finest .”

*Statement from Monty Montgomery

“My work is constantly based on making connections with my surroundings in nature and visually absorbing every point of attraction and emotion through various moments in public. I mold everyday situations into visual forms that express what I felt at that moment through energies, spontaneous actions, nature’s offerings, and very specific spoken words that I seem to hear a little differently. I enjoy the intensity and calmness within all types of people; even more so, that moment which brings true feelings to the surface. I often channel my energy through shape and color relationships that play a diverse role in relaying something complicated or very simple. I enjoy letting the viewer decide upon how the combinations make them feel.”

TARGET Express "SOUTH PARK" 105′ x 11′ Permenant Kreashun Mural Installation is complete in the South Park neighborhood of San Diego, CA. .

Posted on October 6, 2015

Mural Title: “SOUTH PARK”

The goal of this mural was to relate to the local South Park residents by incorporating special nuances that they would notice and appreciate. From the historic clock face on the opposite street corner to the tree at the parking lot entrance, from the original 1900’s trolley that ran down the street to the flight of the hummingbirds that are native through this region, we wanted to reference the special features of this beloved neighborhood. Our hope is that residents and shoppers alike will love and appreciate the mural as much as we relished creating it.

The "Eastern Rays" mural from Longwood University featured as Pat McGee’s new album cover

Posted on May 12, 2015

My longtime friend and former classmate at Longwood College, Pat McGee, has completed his 10th album which is released today! I’m honored to collaborate with @patmcgeeband from an artistic standpoint on this project. Pat is using visuals from the “Eastern Rays” mural in Bedford Hall at Longwood @longwooduniversity for the cover and packaging of his new album. A few color alterations and a “distressed feel” have been added to the original mural images to bring the classic 70’s flavor into the design. The new album is being printed on vinyl as well as digitally. Pat recorded with his dream musicians, Artists that were on some of the most classic albums of all time. The band of legends includes: on drums- Russ Kunkel, on bass-Leland Sklar, on guitars- Waddy Wachtel, Jeff Pevar & Danny Kortchmar. There are also some amazing special guests including Pat Monahan from Train, John Popper from Blues Traveler, Paul Barrere from Little Feat and more, as well as Pat’s long time band members. This album is a return to Pat’s songwriting routes heavily influenced by 1970’s singer-songwriter/classic rock genre.

Monty Painting ERM Close

Monty Montgomery ’98 has left a permanent mark on the campus building where he spent much of his Longwood career.

One of the large-scale murals for which the pop-flavored artist is known covers a wall in a first floor hallway in Bedford Hall. Eastern Rays, a cityscape that he worked on from Feb. 11-21, is his largest solo mural—45 feet wide and 13 feet high. He was commissioned to do the work by the Department of Art, Theatre and Graphic Design, part of his campus appearance as a Rosemary Sprague Visiting Artist.

“The mural represents Longwood to me—how I feel when I’m there, my years of happiness, all of the people there,” said Montgomery, who lives in San Diego.

Montgomery’s work, which can be viewed at www.montymontgomeryart.com and www.kreashun.com, has taken him to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas. In addition to murals and works on canvas, he also paints wood blocks and skate decks.

Montgomery’s career started as a Longwood junior when he launched a clothing line, Cilli Original Designs, out of the trunk of his car. After graduating, he worked as a designer for surf shops in Virginia Beach, later was a designer for an entertainment marketing company in Charlottesville—his clients included the Dave Matthews Band—has twice opened a gallery in Charlottesville and also lived briefly in Boston and Brooklyn before moving to San Diego in 2008.

“Longwood is a big part of me,” said Montgomery. “It’s my home; it’s where I began my career.”   -Kent Booty

Bringing images to life!

Posted on September 22, 2010

I recently crossed into the land of doing my first portrait style painting of something that actually had blood flowing through the body! Honestly, I’m not really sure why I have never attempted this, but when situations present themselves, well, I guess we all push a little harder. Below you see an original photo and what I brought to life in my way!

Baily

I am now offering this as an option! I am currently working on my first photo of kids as well so we will soon see what that turns out to look like, hopefully not aliens! If you are interested in me pumping out your pets, kids, friends, places, moments, etc.. Contact me and email me a photo that has all of what you want and I will bring a little of who knows what to it! I can add words and feelings as I understand what you want, we just need to talk!

C-Ville Weekly Arts Magazine voted "Best Artist"

Posted on September 13, 2005

I wanted to take a minute and say thanks so much to C-Ville weekly for an awesome “Best of C-Ville” party and to the City of Charlottesville, Va. for all of your votes that enabled me to pick up “Best Artist”. I am very honored to be selected and appreciate all of your support. Without the energy from everyone in the community I would have never been able to create and see the way I do. I will continue to do all I can to build the arts in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The Best of C-VILLE

ARTIST
Monty Montgomery

“The founder of Cilli Original Designs and CODG gallery, Montgomery is sharp and focused, yet full of energy and ideas, much like the brightly colored, pop-influenced paintings he produces. He also offers his own clothing line. Runners up were oil-painter Robin Braun and watercolorist Lee Alter. ”
