Monty Montgomery ’98, an artist known for his murals, painted his latest on-campus mural in August. Moment #42, 75 feet wide and 8 feet tall, adorns one wall of the main hallways in Dorrill Dining Hall where students drop off their dishes. “Even if it’s 20 degrees outside or raining, it will give you energy and a nice, bright, happy vibe,” said Montgomery, a Louisa County native who has lived in San Diego since 2008. “I want people to have the feel of walking through a park on a beautiful Virginia day—green grass, the sun popping out of the clouds, mountains in the background and my version of High Bridge Trail in the foreground.” The mural—the fourth and largest from his nature series—incorporates his trademark clean, crisp lines and geometric abstract designs. After finishing the mural, Montgomery touched up and varnished the triptych mural he painted on a warehouse wall at the Farmville Farmers Market in 2014. Also in 2014, he painted a mural in a first-floor hallway in Bedford Hall (45 feet by 13 feet) and at the entrance of Dorrill Dining Hall (10 feet by 10 feet). In October of this year, Montgomery visited campus for the Virginia Children’s Book Festival (VCBF), where he collaborated with Peter Brown on a mural painted on site. A mural painted by Montgomery at the 2016 VCBF has been installed at a children’s hospital in Richmond. Montgomery’s work can be viewed at montymontgomeryart.com. -Kent Booty

It is always an honoor to return to my Alma Mater to create! I hope all of you enjoy the mural for years to come.
