A JOURNEY that began so many years ago….

Posted on March 10, 2016

As I stand here on this beautiful Downtown Farmville morning I am overwhelmed by the thought that this artistic journey began over 20 years ago sitting in the library around the corner drawing my very first logo for Cilli Original Designs which I launched as a junior at Longwood University . As the sun reflects on the 90′ X 20′ “Warehouse Triptych Mural Project” which was completed in 2014, it’s truly hard to believe how quickly time passes. We must do the best we can to enjoy every moment and share them with all the amazing individuals along the way. Thanks to Randy Edmonson, my former painting instructor at Longwood University, Pam Butler of Mainly Clay , the entire Farmville Downtown Partnership, and the Town of Farmville, Virginia,! I am so honored to still be a part of this wonderful town. It will always be so important to me.

A Lecture for the students of San Diego State University "SDSU" on March 1, 2016 from 5:30 to 6:45pm on the campus.

Posted on March 1, 2016

I am very honored and excited to have spoken to the students of San Diego State University on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 from 5:30 to 6:45 about ART and the PATH that it has carried me upon since I was a small child. The evening was was filled with great conversation and lots of learning all around. I look forward to returning to work with the students at SDSU again soon!

Artists + Designers In Real Time

*Below is a statement from SDSU professor and Artist David Fobes

“Muralist, Street Artist, Entrepreneur Monty Montgomery will be our speaker on March 1st, 5:30-6:45 GMCS-333 on the SDSU campus.

I met Monty Montgomery when I had asked him to assist on the SDSU Art Benches Project…/beach-bums-monty-montgom….
Monty is one of the most enthusiastic and generous people I have ever met. He is also one of the busiest artists on the planet and I have been trying to arrange him to speak for over a year. (He leaves the next day for a project in Costa Rica!).

His work is a reflection of his love for life and his sympathetic reaction to his immediate environment when working on a project.
Its going to be a fun evening with one of San Diego’s finest .”

*Statement from Monty Montgomery

“My work is constantly based on making connections with my surroundings in nature and visually absorbing every point of attraction and emotion through various moments in public. I mold everyday situations into visual forms that express what I felt at that moment through energies, spontaneous actions, nature’s offerings, and very specific spoken words that I seem to hear a little differently. I enjoy the intensity and calmness within all types of people; even more so, that moment which brings true feelings to the surface. I often channel my energy through shape and color relationships that play a diverse role in relaying something complicated or very simple. I enjoy letting the viewer decide upon how the combinations make them feel.”

The last Saturday morning on the "Right Coast".

Posted on January 9, 2016

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 3 months since I was last at home in San Diego, Ca. I awoke this morning in a beautiful, hidden abode in the hills of Farmville, Virginia and realized this was my last Saturday here on the East Coast for a while. It’s chilly out, raining, and peacefully still. I will miss these moments and remember them fondly.

Many new works flowing out of the San Diego, CA studio.

Posted on October 6, 2015

So refreshing to actually find minutes between projects to spend time in the studio bringing visions to life on various surfaces through multiple tools. I’ve been following up on written “Moments” in my journal which match with taken photographs on my phone. I constantly feel moments in Nature and within my CORE that I simply know will become works of ART… The “Nature Series” and “Core Series” have been developing for years and I am pumped to share the newest additions with you from both series of work. From so many moments felt in Nature to the vibes that rattle my CORE, they are all so very appreciated, they CREATE the PATH!  #alivethroughart #everymomentchangeseverymoment #thenatureseries #thecoreseries

"The Nature Series" is constantly flowing in many new directions.

Posted on August 25, 2015

It’s always a great feeling to capture moments in your mind and turn them into a visual experience on a surface. “The Nature Series” which kicked off in early 2014 with “Visuals in the Park” has truly become my newest way of taking in nature’s landscapes and relaying them through color, shape, and geometry. Over the last couple years “The Nature Series”  has been constantly evolving in it’s own way and there are many new visions in the works. Nature has always been such an important part of my life and this journey of taking images from nature and turning them into moments such as “Moment #11” and “Moment #12” below, truly allows me to be in that certain moment and relay it to others. Here’s to many many more, “Moments” in Nature.

Getting a little frame work on with Dad at home in Virginia.

Posted on June 27, 2015

Nothing like waking up on a Saturday morning in VA to the sound of birds chirping and wind whistling through the trees as the sun peaks through to bring in a beautiful day in nature. Spent a little time on the front porch taking in this beautiful place and it’s surroundings while enjoying a little morning coffee with my folks.

Dad and I popped to it and started building a new floating frame for “WHY”, an original work of mine from Mr. Edmonson’s painting class at Longwood University in 1996. It’s hard to believe that almost twenty years have passed since creating this piece. I’ve decided to make it a permanent piece in one of the guest rooms at my parent’s home. It will be fun to re visit these memories every time I return home to VA!

HOLY COW! It’s hot here in Virginia.

Posted on June 22, 2015

Punching through this Virginia humidity and getting at new birch panels, wood blocks, and skate decks in the studio. Being surrounded by ~Nature’s Song~ and the palette of “green” is so powerful. It speaks, asking to be utilized through creating. It feels so nice to be nestled back in these woods of this state where I grew up. I once built forts and played in creeks here, I now use this land and Nature’s offerings to create from. Thank You Nature!

The "Eastern Rays" mural from Longwood University featured as Pat McGee’s new album cover

Posted on May 12, 2015

My longtime friend and former classmate at Longwood College, Pat McGee, has completed his 10th album which is released today! I’m honored to collaborate with @patmcgeeband from an artistic standpoint on this project. Pat is using visuals from the “Eastern Rays” mural in Bedford Hall at Longwood for the cover and packaging of his new album. A few color alterations and a “distressed feel” have been added to the original mural images to bring the classic 70’s flavor into the design. The new album is being printed on vinyl as well as digitally. Pat recorded with his dream musicians, Artists that were on some of the most classic albums of all time. The band of legends includes: on drums- Russ Kunkel, on bass-Leland Sklar, on guitars- Waddy Wachtel, Jeff Pevar & Danny Kortchmar. There are also some amazing special guests including Pat Monahan from Train, John Popper from Blues Traveler, Paul Barrere from Little Feat and more, as well as Pat’s long time band members. This album is a return to Pat’s songwriting routes heavily influenced by 1970’s singer-songwriter/classic rock genre.

A little *SUNDAY FUNDAY* with the "Nature Series"

Posted on May 4, 2014

•SUNDAY FUNDAY• Popped up with the sun this morning to get rolling on new panels for “The Nature Series”. This entire series kicked off last week with “Moment #1”, which can be viewed in the “Gallery” – 2014. The series is based on patterns, elements, and colors in Nature. Could be a flower, could be moss, could be a butterfly, fluttering through the trees, maybe even something I thought I saw…

Sunday Funday at the Studio in SD,CA.

Combining these natural moments with my emotions, gives me an edge of creating on completely how I feel and what I saw at a certain moment in the lands where I was raised. I can’t really explain a more core feeling in creating. The series will continue until my last days…

Posted on February 11, 2013

Super pumped for so many Original works to find amazing new homes on both sides of the USA.. One of my favorite recent stories is that I reconnected with my 7th grade Science teacher, “Ms. Cheryl Harris” over the Holidays and now I am super stoked to say that after years of not letting it go, I know now that “Into the City” has found the owner and HOME that I was being very specific to wait for after such a long time….into.the.cityIt’s so awesome when old friends, new friends, folks you’ve only met through the web, and even just on the street at events for the first time, come back around and into your career, to become a “COLLECTOR” and a part of your passion, a new part of your life, what a feeling!! I so APPRECIATE all of YOU!! Very recently, “Battle Alone”, “& What Why”,  “Wall Fly”, “Into the City”, “Airplane Mode”, “Take off”, “Honestly”, “White Sofa”, “Hot Date”, “Lipstick Buildings”, “Unwind”,  “High Octane”, “Humming”,  “2 Late”,  & all 8 of “The ORIGINAL HUB CAP Series” are hanging safely across the COUNTRY. THANK YOU, to all my Collectors and Supporters. YOU fuel me to continue every single day!!!!

Bringing images to life!

Posted on September 22, 2010

I recently crossed into the land of doing my first portrait style painting of something that actually had blood flowing through the body! Honestly, I’m not really sure why I have never attempted this, but when situations present themselves, well, I guess we all push a little harder. Below you see an original photo and what I brought to life in my way!

I am now offering this as an option. I am currently working on my first photo of kids as well so we will soon see what that turns out to look like, hopefully not aliens. If you are interested in me pumping out your pets, kids, friends, places, moments, etc.. “Connect” with me and email me a photo that has all of what you want and I will bring a little of who knows what to it!

C-Ville Weekly Arts Magazine voted "Best Artist"

Posted on September 13, 2005

I wanted to take a minute and say thanks so much to C-Ville weekly for an awesome “Best of C-Ville” party and to the City of Charlottesville, Va. for all of your votes that enabled me to pick up “Best Artist”. I am very honored to be selected and appreciate all of your support. Without the energy from everyone in the community I would have never been able to create and see the way I do. I will continue to do all I can to build the arts in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The Best of C-VILLE

Monty Montgomery

“The founder of Cilli Original Designs and CODG gallery, Montgomery is sharp and focused, yet full of energy and ideas, much like the brightly colored, pop-influenced paintings he produces. He also offers his own clothing line. Runners up were oil-painter Robin Braun and watercolorist Lee Alter. ”
